I’m searching for four generations of women (or more if possible!). Black, White, Hispanic, Indian, Asian: I’d love to find women of varying races and ethnicities. It’s important that I show the diversity of women. My dream would be to travel the U.S. photographing 4+ generations of women. I realize I have to start out small though. Small as in the Southeastern U.S. Specifically, Alabama, Florida and Georgia since I live in Dothan, Alabama.
This project has been on my mind since I photographed these beautiful ladies in the portrait below last year. They are four generations of women. It’s not common. It’s rare, just like them. These women are not just beautiful outside but their inner being is beautiful as well. This makes them double amazing! So great that I want to find more of these type of women. They are strong women because strong women raised them and the generations before them. What made these women strong? What empowering beliefs and traditions were brought down through the generations before grandma (in the middle) that helped grandma? (A short note: I realize there are many strong and wonderful dad’s and other men out there. They are not insignificant. I’ve just chosen to focus on women.) I know these women personally and they have dealt with extreme tragedy and they have meaningful and powerful stories to tell of how they have dealt with their situations. I think most women of substance do. What better way to get a glimpse of the strength of women than capturing their soulful beauty through the lens of the camera? Both documentary style and traditional portraiture.
Finally, I’d like to ask the matriarchs of these families what they’d do differently in raising their children. I’d also like to ask the younger momma’s what they plan to do differently. As mom’s I know we typically try our best but there’s always room for improvement. We need to help each other.
Do you know of a beautiful, strong family of women that consists of at least 4 generations? Are you a member of one? Please fill out the form below in it’s entirety. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at dearvioletphotography@ gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you.
I am Kim a Dothan Alabama family photographer. I also specialize in children, maternity and newborns soon!
