Have you ever had a major experience that completely changed the trajectory of your life? Maybe something happened that gave you a vastly different understanding of what life was all about? Scarlett Chramer did. Although her experience was incredibly difficult, she represents the evolution of what an empowered woman in Dothan, Alabama can become.
Twenty-seven year old Scarlett was living in Birmingham, Alabama and had a life that she felt was ideal. She had a great job, loved the area she was living and a boyfriend that made her life complete. While home on vacation, her world turned upside down. Her mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer on Christmas Day in 2016. Scarlett had to step away from all the things that made her life comfortable to become a full-time caregiver for her mother.
Scarlett said, “I essentially grew up overnight.” As her mom’s caregiver, she was a witness to the slow, painful death of how breast cancer takes a person’s life. In October 2017 (10 months later), breast cancer did take her mom. Through Scarlett’s devastating experience, she remembered thinking that if she could ever help another woman who was going through a similar experience she would do it in a heartbeat. She said that since several years have passed by, “my life is different and it’s a good thing. I now understand how precious time is, and to simply exist, to go through the motions is such a waste. It’s important to do good with the time you have.” She’s dedicated herself to serving an organization that helps victims of child abuse/trafficking and she is an advocate for cancer research pertaining to Triple Negative Breast Cancer (the most invasive subtype) and the type that took her mom’s life.
Scarlett said, “my message to women would be to press forward in spite of your circumstances and when you come out on the other side, live for something that’s bigger than yourself. There are so many people and causes that need you, your skills, and your time.” Although her experience was incredibly difficult, she now feels her life has more depth and meaning and her perspective on the meaning of life has vastly changed.
